If someone ask you the title question of this blog, how would you react? Would you respond by saying, "Of course, I have good sense! Do you! Would you be offended by such a question? It is a very important question that could be ask another way. Are you tuned in to your God given senses. Most of us learn early in life that humans have five senses. They are sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. Some people who have studied human senses insist that we have many more than five. They add things such as vestibular(movement). When we walk we have the sense that we are wobbling or walking straight. I wonder if intuition is a human sense. At times people can sense that something is going to happen before it happens.
What does this have to do with anything? Why write such a blog? Read on and you will receive an answer. I am currently serving as interim pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Hartsville, South Carolina. About six years ago I served as interim pastor at Emmanuel for about a year. Emmanuel has a strong Christian school that was established in 1963. Recently in my coming and going, a particular sound has garnered my attention. It is a beautiful sound. The sound comes from the playground area of the school. Almost every time I drive up or leave the parking lot, I hear the sound of children from one of the classes unleashing their energy on the playground. I hear fun, joy, excitement, laughter, etc. When I served here the first time about six years ago, I'm sure I heard children playing on the playground, but I can't remember stopping and listening to the sounds of the children on the playground even one time.
As we live out our lives, we obviously utilize and enjoy the benefits of our senses. We sit down before tables of delicious food, but do we truly recognize and appreciate the wonderful sense of taste that God created within us which makes it possible to savor the succulent flavor. Here in South Carolina, traveling in different parts of the country over the years and especially the 37 years in the state of Louisiana, I have tasted some delicious food. How many times have I consciously acknowledged the wonderful sense of taste?
The same could be said about any of the five senses. How often do we admire scenes of incredible beauty but not have any conscious thought of the Creator who gave us the sense of sight? It's easy to gaze upon sunsets and sunrises, purple mountain tops, the vibrant colors of flowers and take it all for granted. Worse still, maybe we act like it is a testimony to our ingenuity or creative ability.
The sense of touch is one of the five senses but not necessarily the first to come to our minds. Do you appreciate the touch of warm clothing wrapping your body on a bitterly cold day? Have you ever stopped to contemplate the touch of the embrace of a loved one when you have been apart for some length of time?
Let me ask the question again, do you have good sense? I hope your answer is yes. The question about having good sense leads to another question. How do we develop good sense? My answer is by developing God consciousness. In Psalm 14:1 and 53:1 we read, "The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God.' They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good." Do you think a person who is an atheist enjoys the function of the five senses? Of course he does. What is the source of these senses? It is certainly not God because in the mind of the atheist, God does not exist. Maybe in the mind of the atheist, he is the source of his senses. More likely, he would attribute the fives senses to some kind of evolutionary theory. The atheist lives life without any God consciousness.
The more we live our lives with a consciousness of God, the more we will be tuned into our senses. We will live with the awareness of the biblical truth that we are formed by God and fearfully and wonderfully made. "For You have formed my inward parts; You have covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are your works, and my soul knows very well" (Psalm 139:13,14).
As I have already stated we can utilize all of our senses to the fullest without giving thought to God, but we cannot possess even one of them without God. I challenge myself and the readers to embrace our senses and enjoy them to the fullest but to do so with the full awareness of God, our Creator. "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth" (Psalm 46:10)!
So what is your answer to the question, do you have good sense?
